All you need to do is get into the good habit of investing a small amount of time and money into the winter car needs and you will ensure the continuing safety, comfort and usability when it is needed the most – on those cold winter days.
Why You Check All Your Cars Lights
You need to routinely check both your head, brake and side lights are clean and clear of dirt or snow. Restricting your own cars visibility is one thing when the headlights are not as bright as they should be, but in heavy rain, snowy and foggy conditions, brake lights that are not working properly will place you at risk from other drivers who might not be able to see you.
It is so important to make sure that all the bulbs are working and that your fog lights are working also. Fog tends to creep up very suddenly here in South Wales when on a journey and well-performing fog lights will help to keep you safe in hazardous conditions – seen and be seen always the best motto!
Why You Should Check Your Oil Levels
Using the dipstick (under the bonnet), you must check your oil levels regularly. Car manufacturers have different advice for checking your oil levels so check your handbook to confirm, but generally the engine should be cold.
Slide out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth or kitchen towel and slide it fully back into the engine, remove it again and you should see where the oil level is at based on the markings on the dipstick. This vitally important quick check standing in the rain for a minute will save hours in the freezing cold at the side of the road with a seized and ruined engine.
Check Your Windscreen For Cracks
Windscreen wipers should be checked both at the beginning of the summer and winter but honestly are one of the most neglected parts of anybody’s car maintenance. Rainwater overtime erodes the rubber in the wipers as does the salty grit that is scattered across our roads.
Whilst you are at it pay some attention to any small cracks in the windscreen as these can often be fixed easily but left untreated a bad chip can turn into a crack during the cold winter months. Insurers generally offer free windscreen repair services to avoid more costly replacements, so it is always worth checking your policy before the weather descends and becomes a real issue.
Check Your Anti-Freeze
Whether it is a quick jolly down to the local supermarket or you are planning a long journey to the family for Christmas, you will want to stay inside the car when it is cold. Check that the radiator is working properly and well-sealed. And make sure you fill up with antifreeze. The extra few quid you spend on anti-freeze could potentially save hundreds on engine and radiator repairs.
